Proposed ANZAC Memorial Following its inaugural meeting on 4 August 2009, the ANZAC Day Committee 2010 has started the process to establish a Memorial to the ANZACs in Widgee.Anzac Day 2009 was itself an historical occasion as it was the first time that the people of Widgee gathered to participate in the traditional ANZAC Day dawn service and march. It was a moving testament to the strength of the community that this first ceremony was attended by so many locals and visitors. The establishment of an ANZAC Memorial in Widgee is a major part of the activities of the ANZAC Day Committee 2009. The President of the ANZAC Committee, Mr John Weber, has said that he hopes to have the memorial in place in time for the ANZAC Day celebrations in 2010. Initial discussions in the community have revealed that the project has the support of the wider Widgee community, a factor that is very important for its success. The Memorial will be there not only for the present community but also for future generations who will be able to show their pride and share in our sacred traditions. Members of the community are invited to provide ideas and suggestions for the proposed Memorial, which will be a lasting monument: we want to get it right. Community groups have already been approached to consult with their members and suggestions are required to be provided by the end of September, in time for the ANZAC Day Committee meeting of 6 October 2009. Please note that suggestions may be forwarded by email to the Committee at anzac@southernphone.com.au or in writing, c/- PO Box 1, Widgee Qld 4570. In the meantime, the Committee has resolved to gather some funding for the proposed Memorial, as it will require finances. As usual, the Widgee community is embarking on this venture with traditional self-reliance, and intends to complete by raising monies through raffles and other community initiatives; volunteers have already indicated that they are willing to donate their labour and goodwill. Already the Widgee ANZAC Day Committee 2010 has given its approval for a ‘Wheelbarrow Raffle’ to be held for the Memorial. Donations are being collected by volunteers have begun to gather donations to fill the wheelbarrow and start the fundraising in earnest. We are hoping to launch the raffle before Christmas, when other community projects and fundraisers compete for the finite monies available through the generosity of the community. Mrs Mary Bruckmaier has been appointed as the person in charge of the ANZAC Day Memorial fundraising, and represents the community in this fundraising effort. Any assistance that can be provided to her is received with gratitude and will go towards a lasting testament to the memory of our gallant soldiers.
